Woodlawn - Portland Estates

Woodlawn is an area of eastern Dartmouth, Nova Scotia in the Halifax Regional Municipality, that is mainly residential and retail. It is situated within an area with Highway 111 on the west, Portland Street (Route 207) on the east and Main Street (Trunk 7) on the North side.

Portland Estates is a suburban neighbourhood in Woodlawn, an area of eastern Dartmouth in the Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia. It reaches from Eisener Blvd. in the west, all the way to Portland Hills in the east, and is located to the south of Portland Street (Route 207). Starting in the early 1980’s, the community was built in stages by several developers, and now has a population approaching 6,000 people. The neighborhood of Portland Estates was honoured to receive the Lieutenant Governor’s Community Spirit Award in 2010 for its vibrant, active, and diverse community. In the 1980’s the construction of a new upper middle-class neighbourhood, Portland Estates began development on the south side of Portland St. This area of Portland St has long been home to large car dealerships, which have continued to expand into the Russell Lake development, which is the last phase growing from Portland Hills. Russell Lake consists of executive style single detached family homes, townhouses and in recent years several apartment complexes geared to retirement living.

The area encompasses the growing residential communities of Woodlawn, Russell Lake West, and Portland Estates. These communities enjoy close proximity to several grade schools, commercial shopping areas, and Downtown Dartmouth. These urban areas also enjoy five beautiful lakes including Cranberry, Settle, Morris, Bell and Russell Lake.

Portland Lakes Greenway Trail is a greenway connector trail located in Portland Estates in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The trail winds around Russell and Morris Lake, through the woods, and behind numerous subdivisions and parks. The spot offers lake access and excellent birding opportunities.

Woodlawn Public Library is nestled between Downtown Dartmouth and Cole Harbour—at the heart of the community. The large, bright space was once a movie theatre and now provides traditional library services to the community.
