Hammonds Plains
Hammonds Plains runs along Highway 215 from Bedford in the east and Upper Tantallon in the west. This road was established in 1786 and named after Andrew Snape Hammond. Lucasville Road defines the boundary between Lucasville and Hammonds Plains and runs north to Middle Sackville. For residents living in the area there are three directions which will take them to the full amenities of Bedford, Sackville and Upper Tantallon.
The area is known for the large lots, which are needed to accommodate a well and septic field. Some homes built directly on the Hammonds Plains Road and into the Kingswood subdivision have municipal water. The area is rich with small lakes and includes Pockwock Lake, which is the water source for Halifax’s water supply. Many of the lakes are regulated for non-motorized watercraft to keep the serenity of the natural setting. In the 1990’s Glen Arbour Golf Course was opened tucked inside a community of executive homes. This championship golf course hosted the BMO Canadian Woman’s Open and was ranked 4.5 stars by Golf Digest. In 2016 this course was named in the top fifty courses in Canada by Canadian Golf Magazine.
There are several subdivisions in the Hammonds Plains area; one of the newest is the expansion of Kingswood North, which now is another connecting road to Middle Sackville. The amenities in Hammonds Plains are growing with new restaurants, NSLC outlet, local small grocer and pharmacy eliminating the need to drive to Bedford or Upper Tantallon for everyday wants and needs.
